Tips & Tricks
ENJOY YOUR BOUQUET OF FLOWERS LONGER
A clean vase, the basis for a long-lasting bouquet
The right vase and a hygienic environment are crucial to minimize bacterial growth and extend the life of flowers.
Use a clean glass or ceramic vase , as some metal or wooden vases can release harmful substances.
Rinse the vase thoroughly with warm water and a little vinegar or bleach to remove bacteria.
Choose a vase that offers enough space so that the stems are not compressed.
Remove leaves if necessary and keep the water clean
Leaves that come into contact with water quickly decay and promote the growth of bacteria, which negatively affects the durability of flowers. Therefore, remove all leaves that are below the waterline.
- Remove any leaves that come below the waterline.
- Change the water every 2 days to keep it clear. If the water gets cloudy faster, change it immediately.
Cut the stems diagonally for optimal water absorption
Flowers drink through their stems, and if the tips dry out, they absorb less water.
- Use a sharp knife or pruning shears (not blunt shears, which will pinch the stems).
- Cut the stems diagonally . This increases the surface area through which they absorb water.
- Repeat this every few days , especially if you notice the ends looking dry or slimy.
Choose the perfect spot for your bouquet
The location of your bouquet has a major impact on how long the flowers will last.
⃠ Not in direct sunlight or near a heater – too much heat will accelerate wilting.
⃠ Do not place near heating or air conditioning – dry air causes flowers to dry out faster.
⃠ Do not grow near fruit – ripening fruit produces ethylene gas, which causes flowers to wilt faster.
✓ In a cool, light place where they get plenty of fresh air.
First aid for wilted flowers
Sometimes flowers may appear to droop after a few days, but that doesn't mean they're lost!
- Roses limp? Cut the stem again and place them in lukewarm to warm water for a while.
- Tulips drooping? Wrap them in newspaper and place them upright in water for a few hours.
- Hydrangeas wilting? Cut the stem and give them a bath by immersing the entire flower head in cold water for 30 minutes – they will perk up again!
